Hi data analyst from NIWA here.. yes it has reversed resulting in salty water from various areas accumulating in different areas, but it’s not that big of a deal. Just because sea ice is melting in one location doesn’t mean it’s not accumulating in another location. This it normal climate change, but just different compared to what we have been able to document in our lifetime, yet looking back centuries ago we can see that this has happened many times before and is not something to be alarmed about.

These are all moot comments. Dinosaurs lasted about 200million years. Humans have been on earth for what? 2million?? Who on this string gives us another 2thousand before we self destruct? We won’t even get to see the opening of the Great Rift in Africa. World Peace is needed more than energy transition. Maybe the politicians just needed to distract us because they can’t resolve the issues - or don’t want to.

Aquatic biologist/chemist here. This paper is referring to a “reversal” in the projected trend of salinity decreasing. Not the actual direction of the water like the video made it seem. Basically still really bad tho😭✌🏼

if you read the articles, it's a vertical switch, not a horizontal switch. it has to do with the salinity and ice/fresh water exchange at the antarctic ice sheets. so yes it's news, yes it's not good, but it's not a "global reversal of currents" in the doomsday way we imagine

People are not generally aware that various points of natural earth cycles are incompatible with the flourishing of life that supports the modern society we have. People think of world ending catastrophes, and assume that there will be vibrant cities falling suddenly all at once. It very likely won’t happen that way. The earth shakes off the majority of life on it pretty regularly. Small pockets of various species eke out survival during these periods. People that live leisurely enough to have time to think about this fantasize about strategically insulating themselves from this reality building bunkers or squirreling away resources to save themselves or their lineage. Even they will only have a marginal advantage to make it through some early pinch points. There’s really no way to plan for random unknowns unfolding over hundreds or thousands of years. There’s also no way to bring enough genetic diversity with someone with such ideas to support more than a few generations of humanity. The people that make it are more likely to have genetic advantage over those with resource advantage and survivable pockets will be random and tiny. Enjoy this time of bounty because we are at the peak of our civilization. Don’t get caught up in resource wars, those sent into battle aren’t the ones marked to enjoy any of the security they shore up.
