Facial reconstruction of a 5,750-year-old man from Georgia The man, found in Chiatura near the famous Darkveti and Kotias Klde sites, belonged to the Kura-Araxes culture. The Kura-Araxes culture was largely an East Caucasian phenomenon that replaced the preceding Sioni culture and is characterized by increased CHG ancestry. The westernmost extent of the Kura-Araxes is in Upper Imereti, where this individual was discovered. The Imeretian Kura-Araxes subset differed from other Kura-Araxes groups. Most notably, the Imeretian Kura-Araxans, particularly those from Sachkhere, a site near Chiatura, were erecting kurgans with rich grave goods even prior to the emergence of the Martkopi-Bedeni kurgan tradition. The Imeretian Kura-Araxes culture was also the most materially advanced subset of the Kura-Araxes. Genetically, the Imeretian Kura-Araxans were likely a syncretism of local proto-Kartvelian tribes and the broader Kura-Araxes population. The Middle Bronze Age sample from Sagvarjile appears to support this, showing Kura-Araxes ancestry alongside the proto-Kartvelian high-CHG genetic profile that peaks today among the Svans. The practice of burying the dead in elite, richly furnished graves also extended into Samtskhe-Javakheti, where several individuals, likely from the same family, were discovered in Atsquri, also dated to the Middle Bronze Age. These lavish burials, containing 54 handmade clay vessels, 221 bronze items (including spearheads, daggers, bracelets and torcs), several gold objects, and 286 beads of various shapes, held individuals characterized by a mixture of the aforementioned high-CHG profile and Kura-Araxes ancestry, all belonging to Kartvelian G2a2b2a1a1a1b2 Y-DNA branches. The Chiatura man is well known in anthropological literature. He is often regarded as “proto-Caucasionic,” a phenotype that later came to dominate the Greater Caucasus range. His cranial dimensions are massive, making his skull one of the largest of his era, with a cranial length, width, and cheek breadth of 199 mm, 156 mm, and 153 mm, respectively. These proportions set him apart from the typical Kura-Araxans. He also had artificial cranial deformation - a custom practiced among the Kura-Araxans. #phenotype #ancientdna #anthropology #skull #kuraaraxes #georgia
