I think also should be noted black communities in the UK and AUS are much significantly smaller, less unified and have younger community histories.

America has some of the least insulated white people. This is not praise of America but rather a condemnation of other 8x11’s. Like I truly don’t understand how British folks colonized most of world and still somehow managed to be so culturally insular that tasting Texas BBQ is world shattering

I always try to explain to my reality tv-hating friends/fam that I watch it through a near sociological lens. It’s fascinating. The cultural impacts on the show and outside are so interesting to watch.

I still want a dating show where there’s like one ace person and one aro person just to like throw the allos. I think it would a fascinating way of contrasting how people think about constructing and moving through relationships. The only downside is given the climate, I think they would be painted as villains more so than people trying to help understanding forms of connection.

And I was right. I will listen to you talk about anything lol. But this is why I don't much enjoy the kind of dinner table talk about these shows; it doesn't examine any of the underlying tension of it being a show AND that show taking place in our modern world.
