If we cannot find the space and the safety to witness, honour and feel the emotions we hold in our body, then our mind will go into overdrive.  An avalanche of thoughts crashing through the mind, as the mind tries desperately to think its way to a solution of what is a felt problem. All this thinking will very rarely help us find a solution. Instead it will create more thinking and more thinking and more thinking. This thinking turning into cycles of worry and anxiety. Keeping us stuck in our heads.  And disconnected from our body, where the underlying shame, fear, guilt or anger that is fueling this constant rumination lives. We simply cannot think our way out of our emotions. We must feel them. But feeling is a gradual process, the common advice to just feel all your feelings straight away isn’t always very helpful.  In fact it can be overwhelming. We have been conditioned to not to feel our emotions. So we need to must be patient with ourselves as we learn how to feel them again.  This is a process of restoring a sense of safety and stability within our system, so we can journey out of our mind and back into our body, where we can feel the sensations of these underlying emotions. We must be patient as we rebuild our capacity and our inner resources to process, feel and integrate these emotions.  A small and powerful way to begin this journey is next time you catch yourself overthinking ask yourself. 1️⃣What emotion is this at the root of all this mental noise?  2️⃣Where are you feeling this emotion in your body?  3️⃣Can you allow this emotion to be there to whatever degree feels okay for you in this moment? 4️⃣Can you hold this emotion for 90 seconds, breathing into it and simply bringing more and more awareness to its sensations.
