@feared.texas: Dallas, Texas – July 7, 2016 — A peaceful demonstration in downtown Dallas turned tragic when it became one of the most devastating attacks on law enforcement in recent American history. The protest was organized in response to the fatal police shootings of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota. As the event neared its end around 9:00 PM, gunfire broke out. The attacker, later identified as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson, an Army Reserve veteran who served in Afghanistan, began shooting at police officers who were overseeing the protest. The assault left five officers dead, with nine more officers and two civilians injured. The shooting led to chaos and an hours-long standoff. During failed negotiations, Johnson expressed that he wanted to kill white officers as a form of retaliation for police violence against Black men. To prevent further bloodshed, Dallas police made the decision to end the standoff by deploying a bomb via a remotely operated robot. The explosion killed Johnson.
