In my village and surrounding areas, the man’s side pays money. But the bride usually uses that money to buy dowry. So it is mostly for the new couple to have a better start of their new life as a couple. It is an engagement present. The translation of bride price can be misleading. But I agree that this should not be a tradition to follow.

This an old cultural habit. You cant erase it. This a couple decision. You decided on zero, others may follow ancestral culture. I brefer China stays it was and don’t import bad sides of western. Western don’t have anything good.
