I was 20 on 9/11. Something that seems to get lost when people talk about the new atheists is the overt and quite extreme hostility to atheists that existed in this country. It makes sense that you missed it and I don’t really blame anyone younger than me for not quite grokking this. to be an atheist in mid 90s was to actually be putting yourself in real danger. I believe the first president Bush said like publicly and on the record that atheist shouldn’t have rights. There were studies showing public sentiment on atheists placing them somewhere between pedophiles and communists. I’ve been fired for my atheism. I’ve been dumped and dated only in secret for my atheism. I’ve been estranged from family over it. The New Atheists smashed the hostility to atheism in this country. There was a noticeable and very real change. I actually consider it a very real civil rights victory. Do you know why they are called The New Atheists? Because the old atheists were murdered and driven deep underground. There’s an entire hidden history of oppression and violence that the left loves to ignore. When I hear today’s leftists dunking on these guys, to me it sounds like making fun on people who fought for my freedom and dignity and punching down in the worst way.
