I didn't get a basic research methods class until my sophomore year of college. They need to teach it in middle school. Most Americans never being taught how to tell what's true is literally destroying the country. 😑

I love pulling up those unhinged correlation graphs like “the dollar amount of sales of cheese in Wisconsin is correlated to the number of people who died getting tangled in their bedsheets” to show the difference in correlation and causation

I always explain it thusly: we know height and weight in humans are correlated, so taller people tend to weigh more. but it would be ridiculous to conclude that if you gain 20 lbs you'll grow 2 inches.

And then I’m over here getting bit by a tick once, I looked up the types of ticks in my area, the types of diseases they carried, the prevalence of those diseases in the local tick populations and the incidence of those diseases in the human population in the area. (Still got antibiotics and a Lyme test)

the comparison is usually give to people like that is... when I was in college I drove drunk (ikik I obvi don't do that and I was stupid) BUT I never got in an accident so should we just let everyone drive drunk? no.
