At some point we all have to sit down and decide when we say no. If somebody offers you another drink, you have to decide when you've had enough. If your boss asks you to take on one more job, or work late one more night, you have to decide when it's too much. If your partner takes too much and is making you feel sad and small, you have to decide when you will say, no more. Because saying no is important. And according to Albert Camus, setting boundaries and accepting limits is important in defining who we are. In his book The Rebel, Camus argues that setting down boundaries is a radical act. It's only when we say no to someone or something that we establish who we are. Rebellion will almost always involve saying, 'No, this is my limit.' And inside of those parameters, inside those borders, I will be found. I will define myself by the boundaries I set. 'Oh, that's Jonny. He doesn't work at the weekends.' I am defined by that limit. Of course, we don't like to say no. We don't like to disappoint other people. But according to Camus, we also hate committing to one version of who we are. Because when we say no, we burn off possibility and we commit to one version of ourselves. We cannot be everything to everyone all of the time. We have to set our own limits and draw our own borders. We have to say no more often if we are to be any person at all.
