before you start the car, open the bonnet and feel the engine block to see if its cold, if its cold then start it, if its warm then it means the dealer started the car before you got there, can be a sign that the car has issues starting from cold or has been sitting for a very long time

Top tip ..check engine is cold before you start it up , if warm the dealer may have run for a while to hide some issues ..

Most of that is small things, bulbs etc cost pennies. I check the BIG things! Engine noises, Clutches, gearboxes, brakes (pads and discs), suspension (broken springs) squeaking bushes etc.

if something is not working or is faulty, would they need to fix it before you buy or can they refuse to sell it to you? when i bought my car last year there was a few issues and when I asked about it they said you buy as it is.

quick tip, get a magnet and inspect all parts that should be metal, you never know when cover up was done...

Find the whole thing completely overwhelming. Have been looking for a 1st small car for child, looked for ages but never bought, am terrified of being ripped off. And then nearly agreed a sale to discover later it was a Cat N and the garage hadn’t said! Just don’t know what I’m doing ☹️

if the car battery is drained for sating few days and it wouldn't start with out jump start then you have a problem.

You missed one point, put the ignition on and check all the warning lights are there before starting the car. Some cars have the engine or abs lights blacked out

keep engine off- ignition on and you can check your reverse light yourself. with brake, try and catch a reflection on a wall, windows or car or something. oil can be dirty even right after changing esp. dirty diesel so not a reliable indication

Either take a friendly mechanic or get an RAC inspection. We'll worth in the long run. A decent report can be a good bargaining tool if there are slight problems
