They each had what the other secretly wanted. Lorelai wanted someone that would stand by her side like Richard and Emily to a degree. Emily wanted the freedom that came with Lorelai having to become career oriented because she raised Rory so young. They could never admit that, it took forever for Emily to even say how much she admired Lorelai for doing it on her own. Lorelai will make jabs at Emily, but you can tell how much she still cares for her especially when she is so mad at Jason for the ridiculous party for the company when Emily already had a dinner party planned.

this scene always breaks my heart u can see how lorelai is almost afraid of her touch at first, then her inner child that is always raging and hurt w them finally feels safe and loved for a second, what she's always wanted, to be appreciated, and says "thanks mom"😭😭😭
