I know one theory! His name is Anthony J Crowley. Well, iwhat if the J was the first letter of the name he had as an angel. But then of course he fell and changed his name but kept the J as a some kind of souvenir. Because he knows that Aziraphale loved him as an angel but not as much as a demon, but he wants Aziraphale to love him and so he still kind of pretends to be an angel even though he doesn't want to.. This is also connected to a more famous theory, which I'm sure you all know, about Crowley's eyes. They try to do everything they can to not look snakey/demonic but more human/angelic. That's why Aziraphale at the end suggested that Crowley go to heaven with him and become an angel because then it would be okay to fall in love with him.. And that connected from another theory!! (haha) that the Lord God or the terrible old man suggested it to Aziraphale (that he could take Crowley with him) because he knew Crowley would never agree to it and Aziraphale is so obsessed with being a good angel that he would even throw away his best friend/lover for it... (sorry for the bad English, but their universe is so interesting)..

According to some Christian beliefs, Satan used to be the angel closest to god until wickedness consumed him, he wanted to be like god which led him into evil. In Islamic beliefs he was a jinn who was close to god. When god created Adam and told all beings in the heavens to prostrate to Adam Satan refused believing he was better than Adam.
