I tried to run a semi realistic Thane playthrough once using hella mods. I acted as a true military leader instead of an honorary Thane with no real responsibilities. Most of that playthrough was literally me managing the upkeep for my soldiers food shipments and all. Supplying an army with provisions is very expensive in Skyrim. One months worth of mead for an army of 300 men would be 30,000 Septum's. Now imagine factoring in raw beef, cabbages, carrots, bread, and salt piles. That's not even counting iron and steel ingots along with leather straps for weapon and armor repairs, straw and fur for sleeping rolls and horses, healing reagents for the alchemist, etc. One months upkeep for just the 80 men that I had stationed within Whiterun hold almost ran me 1,000,000, but I did like giving them slightly more than they needed. I spent most of my time in the playthrough trading with merchants just so that I didn't run out of gold. It was pretty fun. That playthrough changed how I play Skyrim even to this day.
