Em dashes are a specific punctuation with a specific function, and they’re not misused by most authors or GPT; LLMs overuse them but it’s not wrong just not something we are used to seeing in blog posts and company emails.

it does make me wonder if chat was trained on large sets of undergrad papers written by ADHD folks. but if that were the case, it would be using them like god intended: for semi-tangential, parenthetical interjections in the form of mostly-complete thought structures.

I use em-dashes to help distinguish voice in characters. I could use other punctuation, but the characters I use them for call for an elevated sense of drama. Where, as for more reserved characters, I don't use them at all.

I just use a period 😂 sometimes I'll make it a whole other paragraph. I love the chaos of the mind. The em-dashes and commas aren't good enough to scratch the itch.
