@sleepyheadkl: Charging a livable wage is a good thing. And here’s how $35,000 breaks down in freelance work. #illustrationart #childrensbook #illustrationartist #illustration #kidlit #sleepyheadkl #artistsoftiktok #freelanceartist
unfortunately everyone will just use a.i if that is the cost to hire a human. Just because it should be that amount doesn't mean its easy to get that much.

Oft I was in that group ages ago and left. Someone was complaining that an established artists charging anything more than $100 per page was a rip off. So many people agreed. People are looking for cheap work, and expect high quality. It doesn’t make sense.

This seems reasonable for a fully illustrated children's book. I've done a couple of books for a publisher -not childrens books - that included a handful of full page illustration, a cover, and some smaller pieces. No layout, just illustrations and I made around $8k CAD per book. It took me way less time than a fully illustrated children's book probably would So I thought the fee was pretty decent. I also dont freelance full-time, I have a full time design job and do illuration on the side.

I mean it's pretty easy to understand that if the artist isn't getting royalties for their work then they need to be paid for the expected lifetime value of the product up front. If this children's book is priced at $10 and goes on to sell a million copies, the publisher just made $10M. They could easily afford $35k for the art for the book.

How do you go about finding work? Do you have an agent or manager? The hopelessness that comes from futilely chasing work has burnt me out more than all-nighters and crunch time ever has.

Baby illustrator here working as a full time in-house designer. How to do recommend balancing a day job with freelance after hours? I haven’t had a job nearly that big before, but I’m about to get one thats going to take a lot of time

free work for an almost 30 page book which will probably be page full illustrations is unbelievable. there's a dedicated discord groups for artists to find remote work and help with charging for projects, lots of their things too

i recently had a publisher offer me $400 for a 40 page fully illustrated childrens book plus front and back covers, on a one month deadline. my offer was only $6,000.

A children's book is often reliant on the art- especially for younger kids. it's make or break. think of famous ones from your childhood- I remember the art!!

So, as someone in the industry, how does style work into the business of children’s books? is it ok to have a signature style that’s uncommon in children’s books? or is it more expected to be a chameleon when it comes to style?

so I'm not an artist but with out even hearing how you have breaked it all down thinks thats sounds so far. I didn't even blink when you said how much. I'm working on my own children book & yes if I know what I was doing would probably be a bit quicker but man there is so much work that goes into this
