The same thought process happens for people learn about the realities of the food and meat industries, but with an added layer of horrifying images of countless animals (vast majority being babies) experiencing pain and suffering and untimely demise. We do it for us, the animals and the planet but there's definitely anxiety filled times where we feel helpless. Luckily for the plastic issue there aren't haunting images and sounds constantly replaying in your mind. Ultimately it's about people caring and people educating themselves and sadly the vast majority of the population couldn't be bothered to do that and live their lives as zombies, simply exisiting. Things will become unsustainable and only then will governments decide to reverse course, but by then it will be too late.

I hate when people say oh well, something is going to end us no matter what so why bother - then they go get in their car and put their child in an appropriate car seat secured properly, then put on their seatbelt, or they put on their bike helmet before riding or they throw out the food in the fridge that says it’s expired even if it doesn’t smell or look spoiled . So it boils down to them saying that when they don’t really believe that they can be harmed by microplastics and PFAS because if they did believe it , then they’d be taking the appropriate precautions to avoid being harmed like they do with their car, their bike , their food etc .
