This why I always set my outter rim joist with a string line then cut my joists back to the house exactly what they need to be

sometimes their measurement feom the ledger out are different because of the siding, drip.edge overlap, siding over siding, warped ledger, many of reasons. more of a reason to run a chalk line at ledger to establish a straight run for both ends of project.
