"people's offense is not the problem, harm is the problem" spot on!

Mikey :
Noted! Only apologize for offending, so the offended people are blamed and I don’t seem as bad.

This is something I’ve been trying to articulate for so long, whenever I’m standing up for somebody else who’s not there/hypothetical people don’t get why I’m mad if I’m not offended! It’s the harm!

for me I'm never offended by racism, I'm disrespected by it. Because what the racist is saying by their words and or actions is that they do not value you either as a person or on the same level as themselves, and I will 💯 always call that out.

It's the same as someone apologising by saying 'I'm sorry you feel that way' like they're not apologising for their actions they're just saying that your feelings make them uncomfortable

Whenever I find myself in the position where I need to confront someone about offensive things they've said or done, I've found framing the problem in terms like "disrespect" and "insulting" very effective

this makes so much sense! I think it also helps me eg as a white person call out racism because I don't have a "right to be offended" by racism but I do have a right (and responsibility) to point out harm. does this make any sense? I'm struggling to articulate what I mean

I agree. Demonstrable harm is the best litmus test for whether or not X thing is okay. Emphasis on "demonstrable", I think we should ideally have evidence we can present to demonstrate the harm, to concretize it in the minds of those we'd hope to convince. And of course, not everything people claim is offensive has done any demonstrable harm, so it keeps the focus on issues that matter rather than the totally natural but problematic tendency of folks to claim something is harmful just because it seems to an uncritical eye like something someone progressive or feminist should have a problem with. When people do that, it dilutes the potency of admonitions against genuinely harmful behavior because reasonable people can't take it seriously. We should always question what harm is being caused by words or actions.

This is so spot on because also if it becomes about offence taken by members of an audience rather than genuinely harmful content or behaviour we risk falling into censorship of anything controversial or confrontational which is very dangerous for art and free speech

Yes! I have been saying this for years. People being offended isn’t the problem. It’s the tangible harm that people take away from “jokes”

Think of those who haven’t come out yet, and are around these people who use this kind of language about gay and trans people, and how it could push them down the road of s h and deleting life. I’m not trans, or gay, but I am bisexual and I know what it’s like to have people assume I could hold these views as I’m married to a man. I’m vocal about my support for these communities to help people who are afraid to be themselves. I want them to know there are people out here who care, and think they matter. It’s the people in the shadows, who aren’t part of the ‘statistics’ that need kindness and respect, so I’ll teach my kids to love yours, to love anyone and to love themselves, no matter who they are, as long as they bare no harm on another. Anyway, if you read this, I hope you have a nice day 🥰

Thank you for this. just had a coworker say something about "being too sensitive." I feel more confident in having a conversation with him now thanks to your perspective and phrasing.

Good explanation. As historical background it is worth noting that "offensive" in English once literally used to mean "to cause harm", before it shifted meaning to the modern version of "hurting feelings or moral sensibilities". Makes you wonder if in turn the meaning of "causing harm" could ever change and weaken, perhaps as effect of majority powers shifting blame.
