for one of my classes we were told to start with something descriptive, so it draws in the reader. something like "Goosbumps rippled through my body as I faced my father" then go back and explain. Also most essays are only 500 words, and I would suggest using the common app as it gives prompts (but most schools have specific prompts) and ps most prompts are boring but its so they can see what you can do with it
