I tell my high schoolers if I can’t read it, I can’t grade it. I schedule a tutorial after school, and the essay miraculously comes back neatly written by the end of the period. I feel most is due to rushing, not all, but a lot.

When I was in high-school (graduated 2011) they would provide a laptop for you to type your notes/answers. no effort to improve.

my fifth grade english teacher helped us improve our handwriting by maybe 2-3 times a week during class we would receive a cursive letter sheet were we traced the letters, basically taught us how to properly write cursive. it improved many of my classmates handwriting and mine🙃

During Covid my district gave every kid (middle school) a tablet. So they have the option of TYPING. And they still write chicken scratch just with the ipen… I required them to start typing their exams so I could actually read it. If we wanted class copy’s of anything we had to send the file to the secretary to print days in advance.

As a para working with high school students, whenever I can’t read the students’ handwriting, I will absolutely go to the student and say, “I don’t know what this word or sentence is because I can’t read your writing. What is this?” And they usually can read it back to me and if they can’t, I’m like you need to work on your writing there!

You could tell them to type it out so you could look at both and you can’t mess up typing

The only reason why my handwriting was messy is because I didn’t wanna be there. That is the truth but if you told me you weren’t gonna grade it because it was messy, I would’ve gave you like 1800 written with a quill one of those feather pins type handwriting.

as a kid I used to practice by going to the tv guide and writing our episode summaries of my fave tv shows. I filled tons of composition notebooks this way

if i can't read more than 50% I give them a 0 and tell them to redo it or mark the ones wrong that I can't read. I have mostly 10th grade, if it's that bad they can type it up if they want credit

What’s maddening is they can’t sign their legal name! I had to take my teens all the way back to basics because at 16 they couldn’t sign their name for their license 🤦♀️according to the staff it’s 100% common now because they don’t write anymore they type

my personal favorite was when my 4th grade teacher tried to expel me bc she couldn't read cursive and then blamed it on me. like ma'am you're easily 30, you can't read cursive?

I can't read my own handwriting but other people can because I do it so quickly it comes out half like cursive and im dyslexic and can't read cursive

the pain is real. I actually had most of my 6th grade writing, neatly, in script this year. It wasn't mandatory- they wanted to learn.

In 5th grade I tell them if I cant read it I will mark it wrong. They do get a chance to fix mistakes so it is often enough of an annoyance they improve and fix their handwriting.

They be acting like teachers handwriting is any better. I had many teachers in high school who’s handwriting also sucked and they knew it did
