Our DM gives us literary puzzles because four of us were English majors. ...we had a math puzzle recently. It was HILARIOUS to watch us all scrabble. 😂

When I moved into my apartment last year, my roommates were almost at the end of a campaign and we all just agreed I’d join the next one so I ended up spectating for their last few sessions; during their last session they got so stuck on a riddle that I had figured out almost as soon as the DM read it that the DM (after like 30 minutes) let me give them the answer and played it off in game by saying that a minor goddess of prophecy felt bad for them and helped them out

there are three doors labeled 7, 8 and 9... one has a monster behind it, the other leads to where you're going, the last leads to death.... 7 8 9=7 ate 9 7 is the monster, 8 is the safe door that leads to your destination, 9 is death...

okay hear me out: make tour players arrive at a crossroads with two figures standing there. Let them know that one of the two always lies, the other only speaks the truth, and they can only ask one question to know which road they need to take

The best puzzles are the ones where the answer is to not try. I've been toying around with a puzzle where they all wake up in a forest clearing. Nearby is a sign that says "You'll never find your way out." All and any methods of tracking, pathfinding, or even seeking out landmarks don't work. Rangers can't use their ability to never get lost because technically they are magically lost. The answer? Don't try to find your way out. The only way out is to wander out. I just haven't found a place to put such a puzzle.

Honestly? I’m guilty of giving my players riddles I know it’ll take them two hours to beat just so I can finish a battle map for the session 💀

I played a one shot that a Philosophy PhD student made for her department. Myself and others were the test because we were more experienced and this, for many in the department, would be a first. Our DM forgot we wouldn’t understand Ancient Greek in which the riddle was written. They played it so well once realized. But it was hilarious and one of my favorite one shots I’ve played.

See my DM has to deep dive and/or duct tape me because I love riddles so much I can answer most of them within like 5 seconds. He had a sphinx with 3 riddles and I got all 3 instantly and he was so mad.

When I DMed for kids, I gave them six or seven riddles and printed out icons that matched the answers (so if answer is time, print a clock). Added a few extras to throw them off and let them spend time trying to match them up.

i give them the easiest puzzles to figure out, very blatant clues, and it still takes them more than one session to solve it 😭🙏🏻

Man I get it. Either they solve it right away because most likely they’ve heard it or I would never have to prep any stuff for a year because they would still be stuck on it. Don’t even get me started on puzzles
