We as a collective, here in America at least, are experiencing the “villagers mindset” I think. I don’t know if there’s any scientific backing on this but it’s just what I’m noticing bc of the massive divide in wealth right now 😭 like what you’re describing is exactly what impoverished people did to royalty. Make fun/pick who to hate the most and blame the most. Except now there’s a larger group of people for us to tear apart.

Questing for Life :
This is just my perspective so the it with a grain of salt. I think it's more that we're coming back to a place where people are trying to practice media literacy. We're seeing the propaganda and manipulation that the things we consume are doing and trying to think more critically about it. Is it just a trashy tv show, yes, do we have high expectations of them, not really. But at least for me there was a clear chain of events that occurred specifically with the Cierra situation. First we set a precedent at the beginning removing Yulissa. This caused the audience to dig deeper since we didn't get context from production. This opened a conversation about the use of slurs. Then we started looking at comparisons to other islanders this season to try and understand if this was an isolated incident or normal for the cast. More was uncovered than just Cierra but the difference with like an Austin situation or etc. is that Cierra was clearly being highlighted as the front runner and likely winner. Then the conversation became the clear difference in treatment for similar behavior and if the president was set why was this person more worthy of excused behavior. At the same time, discourse became very heavy around the social dynamics happening in the villa and so what happened was an apex of witnessed behavior on the show and witnessed behavior before the show. while there is an element of extremism happening in people's reactions who weren't directly impacted by the slurs used, I think what became important to us was the entire picture of being pushed a possible winner who exhibited multiple instances of problematic behavior and the even larger sociopolitical conversation of rewarding people or making people "richer" who ethically may not deserve it. Love Island has such a large fan base because it uniquely allows the audience to have a direct impact on the events of the show and the outcome and sometimes that does extend beyond the superficial aspects of it being a dating show. It's important for people to feel heard even if the ethos may be wrong and I think it was important to the audience that we were heard on this topic specifically.
