nah, Charlie, i agree with most of what you say but this is a wrong reading of the Torah. death penalty was established by God in a time when no sacrifice would be enough to cover that sin - so they punished the body to save the soul. now we have Jesus, and the purpose of the Law is to show us that we cant be saved by our own actions, that we are not enough to be accepted by God and need a redeemer. Jesus was the ultimate and definitive sacrifice; he died because of us, so we were the ones who killed him - and yet, he forgave us. when he was given a chance to start an execution, fully supported by the law, he forgave the perpetrator. and he WAS the law. now we live by the law of love, we are saved by grace, and thats what we should spread - the good news of salvation. im not saying crime should be treated lightly, but mere "justice" wont show God to the world, because God isnt only Just. he is also Love, and a death penalty isnt loving since Jesus was condemned to it himself. we should treat murderers as they are - people who desperately need salvation, like us, because killing isnt an act only against the victim. its a sin against the God who gives life to the person, and that God says this is forgivable through Christ
