@angelinamarriedtobipolar: These are the green flags that helped our marriage survive six manic episodes—including psychosis. If your partner has bipolar disorder, you’re not alone. A healthy relationship is possible when both people are committed to the work. Here’s what’s helped us stay together—and grow stronger—through it all. bipolar psychosis relationship mental health green flags dating someone with bipolar healthy vs unhealthy dynamics #BipolarAwareness #GreenFlags #HealthyRelationship #CaregiverSupport #BipolarMarriage #creatorsearchinsights
I have a spouse of 18 years with bipolar type 1 with mixed episodes and psychosis. He also has complex PTSD, OCD and anxiety.
One of the things that is super helpful is that he will sign releases to all of doctors especially his psychistrist and a release to his therapist. So if I have major concerns about his mental health I can get in contact with one of his providers right away with my concerns. I attend all of his psychiatric appts as an advocate. I help document everything of importance to provide help. My partner is so good to me outside of his episodes and it is absolutely the worst when I become the enemy of his mind. I try my best to be observant and watch the little things and catch things before they become full blown but some stuff still sneaks up before I was able to put all the pieces together.

oh my God I love this and it is so very true. I’m the bipolar one and an example is this past weekend we went on an adventure with my friends floating the river and I lost my shit and had a full-blown episode. My partner handled it swiftly with Grace and even though days later, I’ve continued to apologize he flat said look I accept your apology. This is what happened. Let’s not discuss it any longer and it was all because he understood that it was an episode. I could never ask for a better partner.

Idk how to push my man to do the first step. I really want us to work out, I just get so scared when he is off his meds sometimes or when he starts acting like he doesn't like me anymore. it's mainly a trauma response with my mom cause she was bipolar. He takes his meds often sometimes he forgets though but it's just therapy he doesn't believe it really works, and idk he says he wants to change but he doesn't actively do much to change idk what to do about it

My husband and I have been together for 10 years, and after 9 he had his first manic episode with extreme depression on top of it and tried to kill himself. Every single day we continue to work toward coping mechanisms that help him, and figuring out his triggers.

I have bipolar 1 and have been married 8 years. My husband takes care of his own mental health. He is in therapy and also takes an SSRI for his own depression and anxiety. Him having a space to take care of himself too has really helped us as he often has to take on a caregiver role

That's amazing you have that, I wish more people understood. I was diagnosed while I was with my ex, She left because I was struggling to work full time to provide everything financially and be a spouse and father. I had to spend some time in the hospital too. Now my son and I are alone and it's harder than ever for both of us.

How long did it take to help him realize he needed to change his lifestyle & do those things? My bf has been diagnosed since 2023 & he only recently just started taking it seriously after so many episodes but I’m the one doing the work for him to keep him stable & remind him. It’s been only a few months. When does it get better?

This is such great advice!! I love how you cover both sides! The work that you see him doing! And the work you have to continue to do. This here is what makes a relationship work.

My son has been newly diagnosed at 24. its been a heck of a time. His first manic episode was taking his moms car and driving with no money halfway across the country and us not knowing where he was. until we got a screaming call at 2am that someone was chasing him in Kansas bfe. He was in physcosis as well. 3 years later hes now stable, working for now, and has a newborn .
