It’s graduation season, and we’re here—basking in the beauty it brings. Our alumni and friends of the school are donning their gowns and turning their tassels. Today, we celebrate and extend heartfelt congratulations to our very own Nhlanhla Gabayi, who was conferred the Bachelor of Commerce degree, specialising in Financial Accounting: Chartered Accounting Stream, at the iconic Sarah Baartman Hall (Upper Campus), University of Cape Town, yesterday. You may recall that Nhlanhla completed his matric in 2021 and stood out as one of the top achievers in his year. His journey since then has been nothing short of inspiring. This moment is not only a personal triumph for Nhlanhla, but also a powerful tribute to the steadfast support that has carried him through. After the devastating loss of his mother in 2019, while he was in Grade 10, his Grade 12 Accounting teacher, Ms Cebisa-Mendu, stepped in—not just as an educator, but as a guardian, a mentor, and a source of unwavering love and stability. She became his pillar of strength: opening her home, attending school meetings, guiding his academic path, and standing beside him through every challenge. She celebrated his milestones, encouraged him through his setbacks, and never let him forget how deeply he was believed in. In every sense of the word, she became family. To see the two of them seated together at Sarah Baartman Hall—beaming with pride and emotion—was a moving reminder of the power of care, compassion, and commitment in the life of a young person. “Lento ye-Accounting sayithola kuwena.” (This love for Accounting—I got it through you.) – Nhlanhla Gabayi Well done, Nhlanhla! We are incredibly proud of you. And thank you, Ms Cebisa-Mendu, for being the difference.
