As a Sheffielder I can say we are northerners. Sheffield was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire (now South Yorkshire) imo is the first northern city. In line geographically with Stockport and Liverpool. Not just geographically but culturally too. Economically (steel works and pits) linguistically (Yorkshire accent). Because it’s on the boarder though, that’s what emphasises in northern traits.

It starts around Crewe above Stoke. In Crewe you used get Granada TV and BBC north west. Stoke got midlands TV so that’s where the line is!

Chesterfield is Derbyshire which is East Midlands. Sheffield Dee Daas are simply North Derbyshire

Middlesbrough is the midlands, hence the name, so north of Middlesbrough is north. York is midlands and south of York is south. Sheffield is definitely south, it’s even called South Yorkshire
