Yeah, you’ve hit the nail on the head. It’s clear she’s feeling backed into a corner and experiencing a primal fear for both herself and the people she loves and that’s expressed as this defensiveness and exasperation throughout the statement. Ultimately, I appreciate how honest she was and I understood what she was saying but like you said not everyone has that same ability or wants to understand. I think it would’ve been beneficial to have had a more clear differentiation between addressing her posts and addressing the transphobia. The part about her boyfriend also felt unproductively fierce. Anyone who listens to her music can’t be too surprised she’s standing by her man, but to call the allegations baseless lies without further explanation… not sure a pr team would’ve signed off on saying it like that

As a black person I agree with you. I accept her apology and still believe she should’ve separated her feelings into separate statements. I know she was earnest about the apology regarding her past but it was colored with the defensiveness of the “deer being attacked” feeling that arose from the valid terror from being targeted by anti trans individuals. On that point, I am on her side because being a trans artist of her size must be terrifying. But to shirk full responsibility in favor of fear IN THIS PARTICULAR CONTEXT… was a crazy blunder. It left room for more attacks and left those she actually wanted to be forgiven feeling disappointed and lukewarm. It’s like one little mistake of poor structuring and tone gave her the worst of both outcomes ;(

i think in this era making a statement always makes it worse. i can’t name a single time an apology was ever well received. we’ve created a system that rewards people for ignoring controversy and punishes them for taking accountability.

I loved how you explained it, it does hurt knowing this type of stuff about one of our favorite artists, knowing they once thought that way. Personally, I do find in myself to accept her apology (only the parts that regards me). It was important that she addressed this issues but as you said it could be better worded, but I got the point of it. I’ll keep listening to her art and hoping she keeps trying to be better as a person and hopefully this situation puts an example for other people in general to be careful what they put online and how that can bring repercussions.

but hasn‘t she already shown enough in recent years that she has changed and isn‘t racist (anymore)? she has used her platform to advocate for people for so long, like i get holding her accountable but at what point do we forgive people?

I didn’t know who she was but I’m glad. She lacks empathy. By her logic I can say some f’d up shit an her community & just say, “I’m sorry but I’m not that way so how would I know how the attacks feel?” Her message was literally saying, “I’m sorry but I lack empathy.”

Thank you so much for this take! As her fan who is white and from an european country i was really disappointed in her but also didn’t fully understand the nuance of the situation. It is great to listen to someone who is knowledgeable enough in terms of both lived experience and media literacy to have a balance and insightful take on the ethel cain situation!

and i feel like a lot of her apology could've been ironed out with just one more set of eyes on it. i can only imagine the pressure and perceived time crunch, but i wish she would've had more help editing that statement.

the tracklist drop was another mistake in my eyes. it felt like a poor attempt at diverting attention from the issue, which makes her later statement feel somewhat disingenuous, like her hand had been forced with the spotify hack and she only just then realized she *had* to say something. i think this contributed to that tone of defensiveness/anger/fear instead of reflection

the whole statement read as DEFLECTION!! The context of her trauma and upbringing is being used an excuse for many of her defenders to sympathize with her.

spot on. no excuses, it was bad, point blank, and the apology was another mistake for the exact reasons you brought up. another interesting thing is how her fans (both the defensive and unforgiving) insert themselves. obviously a lot of her defensive white fans have been unforgivably racist, but a lot of white people observing and condemning her have taken pleasure in making it look worse than it was so that they can distract themselves and others from their complicity. “i wouldve never done that” from so many of them sounds so disingenuous bc i know how many of them have said things along the lines of “build that wall.” ironically of course, much like she did. white queer people on the internet have always joked about and trivialized their proximity to conservatism. i heard somebody paraphrase her statement as “im racist, get over it” and i think this intentional misreading is a primal type of self preservation from an imagined cancellation of their own because, whether in the same form or not, some degree of racial insensitivity and trivialization or ignorance of racism in these spaces is almost encouraged. almost every white person talking about it rn is happy to stress out or retraumatize black fans. the statement does basically read as though “i had a racist conservative relapse,” but everybody knows damn well their own “liberal” and “leftist” circles can be just as foul and exclusionary.

We're too scapegoated for anything she said to not be taken the wrong way right now. I appreciate all the correct things you have to say about this, but hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20 and this is not a time in our history where trans women can be successful.

I fear the information wasn’t released/exposed for the right reasons. These people have had this information for years. If their true intent was to make others aware of her past this would have been shared when it was found.

Defensiveness always backfires in “accountability” statements. despite her not taking real accountability (my opinion as an apology does not automatically equate to taking accountability), I think she attempted to from the lense of her feeling personally attacked. She hadn’t exited her personal feelings about it before making her statement. It needed more time, it needed more reflection, it needed more thought, eyes and ears. I felt the blatant and direct racism was brushed over quickly in comparison to the total length of her statement. I felt the response to her partner, as well as having to explain that she is not!!, in fact an *ncest survivor was verrrey defensive. She straight up said she would not be commenting on it further. Hayden has an extremely racist past on socials, that she has not mentioned directly. She has mentioned that she feels regret about words she has said in the past, but those of us who were on her socials KNOW how bad it is. I said my peace with her in the past, I don’t consume her art and never have; with that being said, I would not take it upon myself to put those screenshots out there. I do support anyone coming forward about her partner, those speaking on how her racism has affected them, and those who do not appreciate their trauma (in*est) being utilized in her art as a “taboo.”

i’ll never understand celebrities defending their racist pasts, like there’s certain things that are just plain un-defendable, why not just be a damn good person
