#depression #premenstraldysphoricdisorder #bipolardisorder #dysthymia 5 types of depression 1 Major depressive disorder (MDD), also known as clinical depression, is a mental health condition characterised by pervasively low mood, reduced or absent pleasure and other depressive symptoms such as decreased energy and motivation, sleep and appetite disturbances, hopelessness and worthlessness and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms must be present for at least two weeks to receive a diagnosis of MDD. A person can experience an isolated episode or have recurrent episodes. 2 Persistent depressive disorder also known as dysthymia, is a chronic mood disorder that involves a long-term period of low-level depressive symptoms. The symptoms of persistent depressive disorder are similar to major depressive disorder however they are not as severe. PDD can begin early in life and often becomes chronic, with symptoms that persist or fluctuate but never completely resolve. To be diagnosed with PDD a person must have depressive symptoms for at least 2 years. Major depression may precede PDD, and major depressive episodes may occur during PDD, which is known as double depression. 3 Mixed anxiety–depressive disorder (MADD) is a diagnostic category that includes patients who have both anxiety and depressive symptoms of limited and equal intensity. In mixed anxiety depressive disorder a person experiences anxiety and depression symptoms but neither is clearly predominant, and neither type of symptom is present to the extent that justifies a diagnosis if considered separately. 4 bipolar depression is experienced by persons with bipolar disorder. Bipolar depression is similar to unipolar depression or major depressive disorder however the main differences are that symptoms tend to be more severe, the duration of depressive episodes tends to last longer and bipolar depression tends to be more resistant to treatment. 5 Premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD is a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome or (PMS). Symptoms of PMDD manifest in the week or two before menstruation. PMDD has also been described as depression in women. Depressive symptoms of PMDD include mood swings, feeling upset or tearful, lack of energy and motivation, reduced pleasure and joy, hopelessness and worthlessness, irritability and anger, and suicidal thoughts and feelings. Physical symptoms include breast tenderness or swelling, pain in muscles and joints, headaches and feeling bloated.
