As someone who is Asian and stands out like a sore thumb in Rio, what I did was to also dress as locals do. Wear a cross body bag and have it strapped higher. Wear local brands like havianas and brand less tee and tops. Basically I did my research on what brands local wear and pack accordingly. We went as a group of 3 women where 2 of us are obviously not local and we did not face any issues at all. From a mile away if we see mentally ill or homeless people, we cross the street to avoid them .. basically be alert and street smart. Look around before taking out our phones etc. we had no issues at all during our 1 week stay there. And of course, avoided favelas.

I was in Rio yesterday for ten days and it was fine except ther was a guy who got robbed but alot of people shaded the robber and catcht him and took him to the police 😭✌️

Taxi is much much safer than Uber. 1- taxi drivers know they way around much better. Some uber drivers don’t know their way around Zona Sul. 2- taxi drivers are like a Coop and are respected. My personal experience, I was a solo woman, took moto uber everywhere, partied in the favelas (no phone out), did everything I wanted to do, used phone but went inside shops first just in case, been out solo at all hours of the day and night and honestly I never felt more safe. Going back in 5 months, loved it so much 😅

Married to a Brazilian and we only took Ubers in Rio! If you go to the Christ of Redeemer, it’s very unlikely an uber will pick you up from the main entrance, we had to take a taxi
