One thing that I find funny, is that British society has been shaped by royal factions. If it isn’t Lancaster vs Yorks. Then Mary Queen of Scots vs Elizabeth. Catholics vs Protestants. Now it is British Windsors vs Californian Windsors. It is funny to me 😅

I think this is actually great parenting advice. Gotta find that happy medium. Not trauma but ADVERSITY. 💜💜💜

Are there any english kings who definitely preferred their daughters over their sons? I like to imagine at least one or two were enthusiastic girl dads💜

Yeah Bolingbroke’s kids all seemed very well adjusted as far as medieval people go. His youngest, Philippa is one of my favorite historical figures. Fun fact, she is the first documented princess to wear white on her wedding day!

How much of a role do you think Henry II growing up in the Anarchy as his mother and her cousin Stephen fought for control of the crown contributed to Henry being triggered by threats to his power? Stephen only agreed that Henry would be his heir after his own son and wife died.

I sometimes think upon Ivan IV & Louis XIV—both survived frightening events as boys together w/ their moms being encircled by a menacing pomp of nobles. 2 totalitarian regimes built out of childhood insecurities IMHO. Discipline & security w/ 2 strong parents is ideal. Suleiman was given great martial/governing responsibilities—but his father secured his succession then StM made his mother one of the most powerful women in Ottoman history.

This is making me think about the ~current~ Charles and William, but does this theory of suffering even still have any relevance when the monarch is essentially a socialite these days?

Funny I just watched “The Lion in Winter” and you can really see the dysfunctional and backstabbing going on over Christmas. Also love Katherine Hepburn, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins in their back and forth trying to one up each other. First time I saw it I went to the library and started learning about the real history of these people.

Henry V died when VI was still an infant/toddler right? Do you think he would have modeled his parenting after Henry IV if he'd lived?

Another example of the king having a good relationship with their son is Henry III and Edward I. You can see how being raised with love can really make a great leader.

If Henry 5 had lived long enough to have an influence on Henry 6, do you think he would have been a good influence? Or had another son and tried to shuffle off Henry 6 to the church maybe?

What's even funnier was that The King of France that Henry the Young King allied with, was Eleanor of Aquitaine's first husband... Also, can you imagine Henry V somehow reacting to his sons reign?

Eleanor protected her gayby like my mama protected me. Also geez poor Edward II I mean his wife was just looking out for her own legacy and the realm but she should have just left him as a carpenter. Tragic

Henry the 2nd boys expected to have everything handed to them expecting something from nothing. Whilst Henry the 4th made his sons work for what they got and educated them through hands on training in the trenches. That’s what made Henry the 5th a great king. Henry the 5th wasn’t born thinking of having the throne until his father overthrown Richard the 2nd so he grew up humble not spoiled rotten.
