I don't understand why so many people glaze HRE. It wasn't holy, roman or really an empire. The word "holy" was used because the emperor was crowned by the pope and claimed to protect christianity. But the church didn't control the empire, and emperors often argued with the pope. It also wasn't a real empire, because there was no strong central government or even one single army. The emperor had limited power, and many local rulers ruled their lands on their own. The empire was more like a group of many small states than one country. These regions had different languages, laws, and even money. It was more of an alliance than a united state. The name was purely symbolic, not realistic
