My other favourite is when they have a school AU in somewhere like Japan, Korea, Taiwan (or even in the UK) but it’s the US school system they use 😬 Like I get not being an expert in other countries’ school systems but please be so real, why would kpop idols doing the pledge of allegiance in a Korean school?

Also, google what the money looks like, cause I read several fics where people folded their 1€, and unless you’re superman, you can’t do that, because they’re not notes, they’re coins 😂

Or when authors have characters fly north south and then write them to have jet lag. My friend that only exists when travelling east west 😅

Or when they call any currency dollars. Like I’ve read about Swedish dollars one time and I was so out of it every time.

I went so far as to look through old documents listing average wages for servants in 1890s England just to make sure what I was writing was accurate and believable. a seasoned housemaid could earn £24 a year. a butler around £64 a year if you were curious. these were the high ends of the wages, so probably in expensive cities like London, or experienced servants.

My pet peeve is their use of names, especially family names the western way. And using time the modern way in historical settings.

99% of the time I keep money out of my fics. However I mostly write for How To Train Your Dragon and Merlin, so if I have to mention money, I put something like "He handed the butcher 3 gold pieces for meat then headed home"

Also make sure to figure out if cash/checks are still common in that nation, Idk where I read it but it had a part in Denmark and the characters were using cash and paying bills with checks. Checks are not a thing here and cash is rarely used especially by the younger generations

my appeal to authors is to please PLEASE do some research on the names if you decide to use ones that are foreign to you. I can't stop being mad at Naomi Novik for shortening Agnieszka to 'Nieshka. NOBODY DOES THAT. That name is shortened to Aga, Agusia, Aguńcia, and a dozen progressively cuter versions, but never fucking 'Nieshka 🙈😂

A thing i can get annoyed by is the use of shopping malls in fics. A department store or a shopping district/ street make more sense in some locations 😅

I think authors in general should be very wary of writing about cultures and countries they don’t have any connection to? I have a friend who is a published author and part of one of her books takes place in Ireland and the plot relied on something happening here that would be functionally impossible. I caught it in draft but it’s hard to know what you do not know.

As an Australian fic writer it threw me that y’all don’t have paywave. Granted I write in a sci fi fantasy setting which basically has payWave. I usually generalise things including the price because I cbf figuring out what things would cost in y time period.

what do you mean there's fic authors who don't do meticulously and a lot of (sometimes unnecessary) research into a country/time period to make sure everything is 100% correct? Is that just me who does that?
