How to prune roses in 5 steps When? Late winter, around the time new growth starts. 1:Start with dead wood. Cut any dead wood back to the base. 2:Open up the center of the plant. Take out crossing branches which can rub, causing damage and encouraging disease. 3:Remove any thin, weak growth. Remove canes thinner than a pencil. These canes will grow gangly and produce very few blossoms. 4: Prune the remaining canes. Take the overall height down by 1/3 cutting just above an outward-facing bud.
