I amputated my leg 6 months ago 🔪🦵 (Spanish in caption! 🇲🇽) It feels like just yesterday, but it somehow also feels like I’ve always been legless. Day 1 was hard. I still had a spinal block and every little movement was scary and painful… but as soon as I was switched to oral meds, I felt a lot better. The first few weeks I focused on sim racing with an adaptive hand throttle and working out at CrossFit. I felt best when I was busy, because when I was at rest the phantom sensations would kick in. It’s REALLY weird to have a persistent itch on a foot that doesn’t exist!!! Want to know the crazy thing? I was back in my go-kart before I was cleared to get fitted for a prosthetic leg!! I drove at a national level race 5 weeks post amputation with my new hand throttle. It felt sooo good! I didn’t even mind the crash! Then, around the two month mark, I started getting fitted for my leg. That’s a whole process of its own, but I got to walk out of my very first appointment in what’s called a ‘temporary leg’. Skin issues became a thing as I adapted to having my leg in my socket all day long, and my incision kept spitting stitches and each time I’d have to take a ‘leg break’ for a few days to let those work their way out. That was frustrating, because I like to be on the move! I got pretty fast on my crutches though! If you’ve been around here a while you probably know what my big dream is. The number one thing I’m fighting for… is to be the first amputee Formula 1 driver!! So, no time to waste! At FIVE months post amputation I hobbled myself onto an airplane and got myself to ITALY, the karting capital of the world, so I could start the next phase of my career to race in the World Series Karting. This is the highest level of the sport, and where the majority of F1 drivers started out. I’m here to give the world the answer to the question: “Can a driver with one leg keep up with the fastest drivers in the world?” I already know the answer… but if you’re unsure, be sure to follow along so I can prove it!
