Silent reflux (SR) is the backflow of stomach acid that irritates the throat and esophagus. It’s called “silent” because there isn’t a significant amount of vomit, as is the case with regular reflux. So, the baby experiences reflux, but it doesn’t come up. Signs of SR: ▪️ Wet/gurgling sound from the throat. ▪️ Cries and shows discomfort when laid horizontally. Prefers sleeping in a slightly upright position. ▪️ Appears restless and uneasy—sometimes inconsolable. ▪️ Tends to arch backward (back dominance). ▪️ Doesn’t gain enough weight. ▪️ Produces many drool bubbles and often hiccups. ▪️ Often struggles to nurse during breastfeeding and frequently pulls away from the breast. So what can be done❓ It’s challenging to find high quality studies on what works for SR. However, it’s also hard not to take action when you have a baby who isn’t feeling well. Therefore, I’ll share what many find effective, allowing you to make your own choices: 🔸 Avoid cow’s milk protein. If breastfeeding, avoid consuming dairy products yourself. If using formula, try switching to hydrolyzed formula. 🔸 Elevate the head of the bed slightly, so your baby lies at a small angle. 🔸 Wait before laying your baby down after feeding, preferably for 30 minutes if possible. 🔸 Provide probiotic supplements. 🔸 Assess if your baby may have a tongue tie. Use the TABBY tool available online. If you suspect a need for examination, consult an ENT specialist. 🔸 Prioritize tummy time, even if it’s challenging. A strong and relaxed core helps create a better seal around the mouth of the stomach. Babies can train this through good tummy time. ❗️ If tummy time is difficult, you can find advice and specific exercises in my physiotherapeutic exercise program “Develobaby - Tummy Time.”❗️ Some babies experience physical restlessness due to reflux. These babies may benefit from calming sensory stimulating exercises, which you can find in the “Develobaby -Sleep” program. ❗️ Always consult with your pediatrician or doctor if your child is not thriving❗️ With love, Maria ♥️ . . . . . #silentreflux #reflux #colic #fussynights #babytips #motordevelopment
