In the ER I always try to be mindful about consults near other teams shift change but it backfires so many times. Eg shift change at 7a, 6:30a you have a consult and call. They state pls call at 7a when new times arrives. Bet. Calls at 7:10a. “Hey can we call you back in 30 mins, we’re doing sign out”. Your shift also ended at 7a. So now you’re stuck there for a consult because you were courteous.

The worst is “family wants you to call and give them an update” at 5pm while signing out

We have 7-8 OB groups and some sign out 6-7a, 7-8a, 8-9a or even 4-5p or 8-9p and I can never remember which group has which time slots so I do *always* feel like I may be calling during sign out

at my hospital I literally have no clue when sign out is. We take off service pts all the time and every team is different 😭 and we’re supposed to page by policy not epic chat

Yeah this should be unviersal. I’ve also had doctors interrupt and give verbals while I’m literally giving / getting report. So it’s an issue all around.

You should definitely say hey just next time if you don’t mind only calling me for urgent matters during my sign out. In my ICU if someone comes into the provider workroom during signout we ask if this can wait and don’t allow interruptions for non urgent matters. This is how things get missed in handoff.

I have no idea when our residents do signout. I’d be more than happy to protect that time for them if they let us know.

as a nurse, literally just tell me you're in sign out!! unless it's urgent, I'll be like bet who is on for night I'll shoot them a message and they can get to it when you're done. just want to make sure provider knows before my handoff! or give me a verbal for BS like a diet order on a post-op before kitchen closes!
