I have sewn a ribbon about in the middle, at the top, where it stuck out at the bottom for a bookmark. I put clear nail polish at the bottom of the ribbon to keep it from raveling. I’ve also sewn a rectangle on the front, both long sides and across the bottom, in coordinating fabric,to make a pe/pencil holder

You could go one step further and make names or whatever on a cricut out of vinyl and heat press to the front
