Painting can be an incredibly suffocating form of self expression if you sit down in front of your easel and aren’t willing to fully surrender to the vulnerability that it requires. I can’t tell you the amount of times when I first started out that my night would end in complete frustration because what sat before me lacked substance, depth, and a connectivity to even the simplest of emotions. What I failed to recognize then was that what my hands were translating onto canvas was exactly what I showed up with. Self doubt, fear of failure, uncertainty - all of those wonderful things that can’t be pushed down into the depths of your soul if you ever want to achieve your limitless potential. For these past fifteen years of my creative journey I have chosen to show up every single day and break down my confines. I choose to be vulnerable, to be open to whatever needs to flow from heart to brush to canvas in that very moment, and to go easy on myself if at the end of the night I stand back from my easel and the painting looks nothing like what I had hoped it would. Why? Because no matter the outcome of my attempts I am always learning, I am always growing, and I am always getting better. To all of you brave souls out there trying to find a rhythm within your craft in those early stages, go easy on yourself.
