@v.aelo: SIDEBAR: I want to be transparent about my stance on zoos and animal enclosures. I do not support facilities that exist primarily for entertainment or profit—those that exploit animals for commercial gain with little regard for their welfare. I believe that animals deserve to live freely in their natural environments, not behind glass or bars for human amusement. That said, today I visited my local rainforest zoo, which operates as a non-profit organization. Its mission is focused on education and conservation, not entertainment. Majority of the animals housed there are injured, endangered, or otherwise unable to survive in the wild. I will acknowledge that there are a few species—such as snakes, alligators, and tigers—that are not native to Hawai’i, and I do have some reservations about them being here. However, given that the organization is not exploiting these animals for profit and instead uses them to educate the public and re-home, I believe the overall impact and intent is a positive one, reservations or not. I chose to visit in order to learn more about my native wildlife and support a facility that seems committed to ethical care and public awareness.
