As a paramedic I laugh when a pt tells me they don't want me to do the IV and they will wait for the Dr at the hospital.

So crazy story, I came to ER because I thought I was having a bad case of reflux. I had spent the 3 days prior in the bathtub. It was the only way I could get relief. I didn’t have insurance at the time. I was not able to eat or drink without throwing up. After 3 days husband asked me if I was ready to go to ER. It took 24 sticks before they got a I’ve line. They tried a vein finder, didn’t work. Finally took a 30 year veteran and a premie pic line in my hand.

This is so weird to me nurses don’t do IVs or take blood. Only doctors typically interns though

A doctor I worked for told a patient who requested he do the iv “ill hold your hand while my nurse does it, but if you don’t want to be stuck multiple times you better let her do it”

I had an anesthesiologist put my IV on once. it was after four different nurses had tried. he looked at my hands and arms and got the ultrasound. I don't know if it's different elsewhere, but here anesthesiologist puts IVs on before surgeries. that's why they are good at it.

So, it IS a nurse thing? Wanting to poke at and feel veins. I'll be sitting there and my parter will start poking my arms feeling up my veins 🤣 be like "damn, you must be real hydrated, your veins are good today"

I’m a difficult stick. I want the grumpy old nurse who understands what I mean when I tell them my skin is deceptively tough and causes issues trying to advance the catheter. She’s gonna use her sense of touch and not her eyes to get my iv in.

As a paramedic, I have started many IVs in the back of the rigs bumping down the road. I tried on a mannequin arm and could never hit the vein. So weird.

To each their own skill set. 😁 Personally, I want the person who does nothing but start IVs to do mine. They can do them with their eyes closed and get it done right the first time and without the patient feeling the poke.
