that distinction is invented by engineers, who frankly think a little too highly of themselves

I might be out of the loop; are the social sciences deemed a humanities?

psychology is absolutely a science what i've heard refered to as the "soft sciences" as opposed to the mathematics heavy things like math, engineering etc.. called the "hard sciences" and people tend to only think about the "hard" sciences but soft sciences are science too!! as a former psych major turned engineer.

Not that I’m a fan of the distinction in the first place, but if they’re gonna do this, the question needed to specify “hard sciences.” 🙄

also in that case why are they including engineering as a science, that's far less of a science than social science

sociology and psychology can rejoin the real sciences when they use statistics properly 👍

Anyway, the class is about statistics and the issue is not statistical in character, is about the definition of the category. And it seems the question didn't define clearly the categories.

There is a pretty big difference between something like anthropology and something like chemistry though. The replication problem, for instance, is a much bigger issue in the social sciences. While I know that some use the distinction purely for derogatory purposes, I don't think the distinction is entirely without merit.

What got me was my school gave me a BA for Psych with no BS option... meanwhile the Hospitality majors, who I love and adore and do not blame, graduated with a BS 💀💀💀

Idk, as an engineer, I wouldn’t say hard sciences include social science, I think they are really different, like social science includes humans which all act in their own way (and motives), rather than studying natural phenomena like gravity

I’m convinced it’s gotta be the patriarchy somehow😂. Like, social SCIENCE sounds like a science to me, but of course it isn’t🤦♀️

Literally. I got a Bachelors of Arts in psychology. Mind you the “-ology” portion of the word can be derived as the science of. Social sciences don’t get the respect they deserve

I mean my astronomy, atmospheric science, and geology degrees were all arts. But my friend who did art and graphic design was an engineer and gets paid like 4x more than me and can get a job bc of that distinction. Bc my degree is ‘fake’ in some company’s eyes.

For statistics, this is probably done because of the different use cases in the fields. Quantitive statistics like the kind most used in engineering, are almost entirely opposed to qualitative statistics - like those used in social sciences. Usually, the two groups hate each other’s methodology with a burning passion

This is just bias and prejudice. They don’t consider social sciences to be valid because they don’t make money on the same way

some Computer Science majors are Bachelors of the Arts and not B.S. and I think that's pretty funny. Social Sciences are sciences though
