So unlike Europe, which took names from professions, Japanese took names according to their location to the next rice field?

Before the Meiji Restoration, there were no last name among Japanese normal civilians. In 1875 the Japanese government forced all citizens to use last name, and civilians took their last namefrom the environment around them.

Probably because they were referring to people based on where their family lived? I’m Haruto, from the family that lives above the rice field. I’m Keiko, from the family that lives by the mountain rice field. I’m Naoko, from the the family that lives by the alcohol rice field.

My husband's family is 三土 (Mituti, 3 soil). The family is originally from Hokkaido, but my husband's great grandfather moved from Japan to Brazil, had a family, and then my husband's father moved back to Japan. The funny thing is, my husband was born in Brazil, I was born in the US, and my children were born in Japan. Our family is literally made of the joining of "3 soils." 😊 If that's not destiny I don't know what is haha.

Yes, when Chinese see the Japanese name,we can tell where their ancestors live, like Panasonic's used name is 松下電器製作所,it comes with the founder 松下幸之助(Matsushita Konosuke)so in Chinese Panasonic is called 松下(Songxia),but we don't use Japanese pronunciation ,cuz Kanji is just Chinese ,so when we see Panasonic we can imagine the meaning is literally "Under the pine tree",but we know such combination as a name is a Japanese name😁

So "ta", "da" or "田" just means rice field in every single name. Yama=mountain, naka=inside of, ue=on top, shimo=under, yasu=cheap, kane=money, saka=alcohol, sugi=?? Hahaha. Japanese is interesting btw. I'm still learning it. I love your videos
