I'm kinda the opposite. I'm Sudanese American, but I thought I was African American because I was indeed African and American lol. it was written on all of the demographic sheets, so I just thought that's what I was. I grew up in all black communities, had all black friends, and nobody corrected me EVER. I knew that I wasnt the same as my black friends, because I was Sudanese and they were ADOS, but at the end of the day we both checked off the box of African American. It wasn't until YEARSSSSS later that I ever heard of it being considered the ADOS ethnicity and not just a general category for the African diaspora. it was thanks to tiktok actually that I learned that African American is not for all Africans born in America, but for specifically those who consider themselves ADOS. I'm not excusing what Zohran did, idk what his motives are, but I will say that sometimes people just don't know🤷🏽♀️like I said, I grew up in a predominantly black city, had predominantly black friends, predominantly black school, nobody ever mentioned that this was a closed ethnic category reserved for ADOS people. Again, I don't know that man and I don't know his motives so I'm not gonna excuse what he did, but I can and will say that it's not so common knowledge that AA is only for ADOS, because clearly a lot of people think it's for the African Diaspora as a whole.
