I don't believe James reaction is based on his partner or abuse. James never considered he family wouldn't come back. OP turned his world upside down because he never once thought he'd loose them no matter the behaviour.

My only issue, as someone who lost her sister unexpectedly, is that losing a sibling changes you. She may now realize that she wants all the family she can get, especially sisters. I don't blame OP but grief changes people. The SIL was an AH definitely.

The wife didn't like how controlling her ex MIL was but she only ended up becoming that exact same person for her second husband. She's now the controlling one and I think that she can control his family now that she burned that bridge and doesn't want to bother reconstructing it like an adult would have to.

Aria sounds like an AH, yes. But I also want her side and Jake's. It's very possible that the EX MIL could have been truly horrific to traumatize her (seen it happen, person ruined all possible relationships bc of it for years).
