@authormmcmahon: Love this observation from @HeyJules (your reading bestie) !! While there are definitely modern books that offer a less movie like structure, I highly recommend dipping your toe into some classics! Challenge yourself to slow down and think (it’s fun I promise) #BookTok #literaryhistory #classicbooks #bookrecs #writertok #readersoftiktok
as a writer I hear so many readers saying that they only read the dialogue. it's discouraging, like I enjoy writing prose and it makes me worry about the marketability of my current project within the current culture

1000%. It's the same with the tropification of novels. It's like just creating Templates and spotting characters into it!

I feel we’ve steralized literature with cancel culture.

My issue isn’t with prose, I find there can be a brilliantly woven story without fancy language. My problem is that the actual story (the internal journey of the main character) is so often neglected now that I can’t even tell what it was supposed to be when I finish the book.

this is why i love Donna Tartt (The Secret History, The Goldfinch), Brett Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero), R.F. Kuang (Babel cause Poppy War had very minimal prose) because these authors actually write modern classics; using prose and the English language to carry you through the experiences of the characters rather than just making you imagine what the scene looks like.

I feel this is a take you have if you don't branch out beyond the modern books that make it on your algorithm.
I enjoy me some classics but the modern world is also full of thoughtful, slower paced works. You'll find them in litfic, and from established authors who do have more wriggle room than a debut because they've got an established audience.

But to be fair people in the comments were saying that phrasing it as "He brought the cup to his lips" instead of "He drank" is evidence of this "writing scripts" thing, so maybe it's not the best take in the world

no fr it's so annoying to read a book until the end and find our that that was it... no imagery or allegory to chew on, what you read surface wise is what you get, I get my brain tickled for an hour and that's it? last time I read a book like that it annoyed me sooo much I just stopped reading book of that genre

THIS!! I'm writing something rn loosely inspired by a lot of old dystopias (ie handmaids tale or anything by George Orwell) and i think modern "book tok-y" people would think its boring or pointless bc it doesn't have a million trope descriptors or any end game romance

I don’t mind the minimal prose as long as the story itself is entertaining, the characters are 3D, and everyone has chemistry. But lately, there doesn’t feel like love is being put into books anymore. It’s all “how many tropes can we cram into this story?” Resulting in brain dead characters, rushed plot points, no chemistry between characters, and Mary Sues.

Not only is this true for books but it’s creeping into fanfics as well and it’s a little jarring when it happens:

i feel like a lot of modern books dont describe stuff well like i was reading it ends with us and the part at the start of the book when she was on the roof was so hard to visualise cuz it basically said "i was on the roof then he came in" barely any desc on the location
