First grade teacher too! Is there a reason you don’t get to decide anything with your schedule? Genuinely just curious. We don’t control when we have specials and reading intervention but we build everything else in around that (however we want as long as we get enough minutes for each subject)

Do teachers not get to decide on what their schedule is besides their preps? I’m given when my kids will go to PE, library, and music and those are my preps. Other than that (besides when recess and lunch recess play are) I get to decide what I want to do when I want to do it.

@Amanda Jakuboski: School starts a 7:40 but kids can come in at 7:10 and then we don’t have lunch until 12:00 🥲 no break is brutal

I teach first and this is essentially my schedule - all ELA in AM, recess/lunch/specials, then all math in PM. I love it!!! They are fresh, sharp, and more able to sit quietly in the morning for the read aloud and comp. When we move to phonics, I do a lot of movement based stuff, switching from desks to carpet and back, etc. Math in the afternoon I LOVE because I need them awake, actively engaged, and ready to work in groups/partners. I do a lot of stations and math games to make it fun.

The only recess they get is around lunchtime?? My schools kiddos have one in the AM and PM in addition to lunch!

You will make it work! Build in those brain breaks and some movement. As my coworker told me “rise to the occasion”… you have to because you don’t have a choice 🤷🏼♀️make the best of it and don’t go into it with a negative mindset. Think of how it can be positive. I always loved having math after PE because my blood was flowing and I was focused (adhd, hi lol). Maybe having it post recess will be great!

Maybe for the transition to math you can make it a number related movement activity or some kind of interesting hook.

This is so interesting I’ve never heard of a school dictating your schedule. Is this a charter school?

only one recess?! that seems so tough to not have a recess in the AM with all of those big blocks!

It’s crazy to me that you don’t get to make your own schedule. We get specials and obviously start/end/recess/lunch done for us, but then we get to schedule out the rest of our day. We have to send it to admin so they make sure we’re hitting everything, but even then my admin is super flexible.

I enjoyed having math right after lunch/specials last year! I felt like they got a good break and then were ready to roll with math!

Math in the afternoon is hard especially if they are coming back from specials. I usually try to do mindful meditation after lunch or specials for like 5 minutes so we can come back ready 😊

I love that your schedule has time for morning meeting! Kids come in our room at 8:45. I have math 8:45-9:30. Reading 9:20-11. Lunch/recess. 11:00-11:45. 11:45-12:00 ss. 12-12:30 reading intervention. 12:30-1:15 specials. 1:15-1:45 writing 1:45-2:15 math intervention. 2:15-3:00 science. But car riders have to be in the cafeteria at 2:50! 🤔

Maybe do like a snack time right after recess! I’m not sure if you have specific snack time or eat whenever - might break it up a bit!

It’s wild to me that different parts of the country have such shorter reading blocks than we do. I basically teach reading all morning, 120 minutes before our morning recess. 😅

I love doing ready first thing! I have found the kids to be more calm and engaged for reading at that time. As far as science/SS, try to make it more interactive/hands on when possible. That will help with the sitting.

I’m curious: I teach middle school, have taught 4th elem. & 6th in elem. In all of my 30 years of teaching I’ve never got to pick my schedule!!!
