But was it a forced run for the second baseman? I feel like if it wasn’t a forced run, then does he technically have to run? And if he doesn’t have to run and he’s standing on the bag, then he should be safe. Now I don’t know all the rules of baseball, so I would have to defer to somebody else…but those are my feelings on this play. If the second base player got hit by the ball and he was forced to run then yes, I could see where that was an out.

Katie Kay Watson :
So we had an issue where a batter was hit by the ball and the umpire rule the batter was safe as the fielders had a chance to feild the ball but didn’t.

Isn’t it the lead runner that is usually out in these situations?

I think you are wrong on the infield fly rule part of it. An IF is a live ball and if it hits a runner on base or not he’s out.

Another exception to this rule is if the ball passes an infielder (other than the pitcher) making an attempt at the ball before hitting the runner.

I agree by the letter of the law this would be interference as runner was hit in front of fielders. However, it looked like niether fielder had a chance of making a play on that ball. Therefore, if I’m umping that game it would be a no call for me, BR safe at first and nobody else advances unless forced.

This is a huge misconception by fans n coaches alike. Everyone thinks he’s safe because he’s on the bag.

The tone of the parents yelling “he was on the bag!!” but being completely wrong about the rule is INFURIATING

What if the Umpire can say without a doubt that the infielders had no chance of making the play on the ball regardless? Would it still be runner’s interference?

Hit by a batted ball while runner is fair territory the runner is out. It doesn’t mention anything about being on a base. Runner is out.

I agree .... That makes no sense at all .. A safe base is not safe ..... now , if it was a force play ... I would give you the nod ... The runner doesn't have to run bcuz there is no force

So the runner is forced into risking getting out in a double play or holding his ground and getting out himself?
