so... she's learned icelandic, married an icelander, is even willing to work a job that she'd arguably be overqualified for, and yet they *still* show her xenophobia? and all of this from a supposedly "very progressive country?" ๐ color me shocked.

This is why I always think itโs funny when a lot of countries like Iceland claim they donโt have the same bigotry as more racially diverse or immigrant based countries like USA or Canada. They have the same biases and even worse, they just donโt let in anyone who isnโt exactly like them

If she is a therapist, she should just rent a little office and start getting English speaking clients. She will be fullt booked very soon

Japan is like this too. The amount of xenophobia that prevents non-Japanese people from renting apartments, getting jobs, even โJapanese onlyโ resorts etc. Iโm surprised itโs not talked about more, itโs pretty gross.

Itโs easy to be โprogressiveโ when your country is racially homogenous. Things take an interesting turn when โthe otherโ show up. Thatโs when all this โprogressiveโ places start to sound just like MAGA.

I have a hard time believing this. We have a labor shortage and a huge amount of jobs available and we also have a lot of immigrants here that do not speak Icelandic. If I go to the grocery store or a restaurant or a clothing store, there is a good chance I have to speak English to the staff. There are so many different job sectors that are short staffed. So something is not adding up.
yes, she should accommodate to the country. Iceland doesn't owe her nothing. she owes to Iceland for accepting her in.

Every Icelanders have studied Danish. That doesn't mean that every Icelandic therapist is proficient enough in Danish to work there!

Nobody owes anybody a job and I agree if youโre choosing live in a different country and you donโt speak that language youโre obligated to learn that language itโs not on the natives to learn your language

Icelandic is one of the most challenging languages to learn. Learning Icelandic for 1-2 years part time is not enough to speak it at the level required for therapists unfortunately. If I had mental health issues I, as a patient, would not want to struggle to find words in a foreign language to communicate with a therapist Iโm paying a lot of ยฃ for. Furthermore, she does not have clinical psychology education, she has a mental health masters, and there are barriers for her to legally work in a country with different legal requirements for those who want to be therapists. This is the issue with transferring international healthcare degrees. Even nurses struggle to get certified in Iceland. When you get educated in a highly controlled field it can be (rightfully) more challenging as you have to meet the specific standards for that country. ๐ฅฐ

I canโt speak for Iceland but from what Iโve experienced in the Netherlands, translating degrees (specifically psychology degrees) across countries is often difficult as each country has a different set of priorities for what that degree entails. So qualifications donโt always transfer over either. Maybe thatโs contributing to the problem as well? :0

I live in Sweden, so of course, I learned the language in order to work here. I never expected, nor did I assume, that others would learn my language just to communicate with me. It feels like a lot of Americans have a sense of entitlement.

Sounds like BS. As psychologist Julie like in IS or Canada you need to pass exams for your degree to be recognized, you need your language to be perfect and so on. I donโt think she did any of that and does not want retail job because she wants to be paid big money. There is no such this that if you have a degree they have to pay you certain amount.

you get a % higher pay fore having a degree in general its not like retail jobs would pay phsycolegist wage just a union % fore being more educated. many foraighners with good education get jobs here worked with quite a few that where way more educated then the job required.
