it's about what's pleasing to the eye. and giving the red trunks heavy shading breaks up the red/blue and yellow belt. + the cape is red. it makes his silhouette more pronounced to shade it this way.

its just a stylistic choice its the same where how im batman tas his cape n cowl are blue but it looks black with a blue shine to it. same with superman here its red, it just looks black with a red iridescent for style

it's supposed to convey that it's a shiny material rather than the cloth material of say the cape. It's a red shiny trunks. So the red here is actually a highlight rather than the black being shadow.

Different materials have different shadow values. Also the crotch angles towards the floor more, making it darker. Also comic book shading isn’t always realistic
