He lost his beloved wife, Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was his strongest supporter, the mother of his children, and the first believer. He lost his uncle, Abu Talib, who raised him and defended him against his opposition. He traveled to the city of Ta’if where he was verbally abused and physically attacked. But Allahﷻ promised him and us, “So truly where there is hardship, there is also ease. Truly where there is hardship, there is also ease.” (94:5-6) One blessed night, the Prophet ﷺ was taken on the most miraculous journey that any human being has ever been on—Al-Isra wa al-Mi’raj. In one night, he went from Makkah to our beloved Masjid al-Aqsa, and from there, he ascended the seven heavens and went where no creation had gone before. He prostrated in the presence of Allahﷻ Himself. On this night, after all this heartbreak, the Prophetﷺ was given the gift of Salah and there is a powerful lesson here. Prayer was a source of relief, comfort, and tranquility for the Prophetﷺ. He told us, “The coolness of my eyes has been placed in the prayer.” (Sunan al-Nasa’i) When he would ask Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to call the adhan and prepare for salah, the Prophetﷺ would say: “Oh Bilal, bring us comfort by announcing the prayer.” (Sunan Abi Dawud) The prayer was such a powerful means by which the Prophetﷺ found strength with his Lord. Whenever something troubled or distressed him, he would turn to prayer. (Sunan Abi Dawud) May Allahﷻ make the prayer the coolness of our eyes as well and allow us to find comfort in it during times of difficulty, and healing in moments of pain.
